- History:
- Pre-Columbian
Little is known about the origins of the tribes that compose the Cascadian confederacy. Their ancestors were believed to have migrated over the Bering Land Bridge and settled in the Pacific Northwest, along the western side of the Cascade Mountains and along the Pacific Coast, approximately 4500 BC. Over time the region began to be dominated by tribes of Salish descent and ethnicity. These tribes lived as fishers and hunter gatherers, up until the 1000s, where new ideologies were introduced via the long lost Anasazi civilization in the Southwest. Although agriculture was already common in the Cascade region, it was not on the grand scale as shown by the Anasazi. This agricultural revolution led the tribes to settle down and form grand cities, encouraging the growth of specialized talents like artisans. By the 1400's estimates range to almost 30% of the Native American population living n the Pacific Northwest.
Post-Columbian and Unification of Tribes
However, with smallpox being brought over by European explorers in Central America during the early 16th Century, most Native American civilizations--including the Anasazi--die out. Due to their isolation, damage was kept to a bare minimum: the Salish-speaking tribes in the Cascades only lose roughly 80% of their population. After the population becomes largely immune, the population grows again and by 1550 there are approximately 1 million Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. After much warfare, three major tribes emerged: the Chinook, along the Shocatilcum (now called Columbia) River Valley; the Quinault, along the coast of the Salish Sea; and the Kwakiutl, along the Lower Mainland. In 1589 the Quinalt tribe leader Kiyiya persuaded the then-warring tribes to unite as the Salish League of the Cascades (Cascadian Confederacy). Over the next century, the population rises but technology still stagnates at the Iron Age.
Westernization
In 1646, a strange ship entered the Salish Sea. Much larger than any Cascadian whaling or fishing vessels, it quickly became a target of interest and landed in Quinault, the largest city. This vessel was a Mittelamerikan light ship. During it's cartographic expedition around California, a storm seperated the flagship from the rest of the Mittelamerikan vessels. Led by the explorer Franz Grundmann, the crew of 80 quickly became stars in the Salish League. The Grand Council held an enormous feast in their honor. The Cascadians became quick to adopt the ideas and technology of the Mittelamerikan sailors, many learning German, converting to Christianity, and birthing blue-eyed children. The Mittelamerikan crew left as heroes in 1692, with a hefty bounty of rare furs to trade with back home. With Mittelamerikan technology available, the Salish league modernized over the next century. Gunpowder weaponry were in the hands of all Cascadian warriors by the 1720s, which allowed the Confederacy to further expanded their lands. In 1753 a reverse-engineered corvette was adopted as the first military naval vessel. As the 19th Century dawns, will the Cascadian Confederacy successfully industrialize and rise to the internatinal scene as Europe narrows in on colonizing, or will they collapse like their many other tribal counterparts?
- Religion:
- According to Salish folklore, men were one of the first animals to inhabit the world, and there are spirits for every living being in the world. Tribal tales are used to explain every aspect of life ranging to how the Sun was born to how tobacco was discovered. Salish Folklore is the religion for 90% of the confederacy. Due to Mittelamerikan exposure, 10% of the population follow Christianity.
