Operation Hawkeye Empty Operation Hawkeye

"Gryphus 1 and 2, you are cleared for takeoff."

Dawn has just broke in the Tau Sea. Usually Maj. Bruce Norman would be waking up right now, but today he's wide awake. The mix of caffeine and excitement for the upcoming mission has done that to him.

He looks to his left and sees his wingman, gives him a thumbs up and closes his canopy. He looks back to see that the crew on the flight deck have moved to safety in order to not get hit by his engine's blast. Norman straps on his oxygen mask and sets his engine's throttle to afterburner. "Let's go."

The whirr of the engine behind him increases in volume and he's pushed to the back of his seat. The aircraft catapult has flung him forward, off the front of the carrier. The Shadow shakes, but he regains control of it ant pitches up. He and his wingman bank to the right. After them, Gryphuses 3-6 launch.

"Yutin, Gryphus team is airborne."
"Roger that. Proceed south-southeast and begin your mission. From now on you are under the command of Guardian Snakeye."

Gryphus flight breaks the sound barrier a few kilometers away from the carrier battlegroup. The Shadows are escorted by Templar fighters until they are 20 km away from the carrier. Then, the Templars break off and resume their combat air patrol.
"Good luck Major, bring us back some good gifts."

"Snakeye, we're about to make landfall."
"We see you Gryphus. Turn due east once you hit the beach."

Fifteen minutes after launching off the ONS Yutin, the Shadow flight has reached their top speed of Mach 1.7. While the flight focuses on keeping a close formation, Norman sees the incoming cliff edge which marks the eastern shoreline of the Tau. Rapidly the flight soars past it, and the pilots bank their aircraft slightly to the right to continue on their course.

Norman looks at his radar altimeter. He's 120m above the forest. He's got a fair bit of wiggle room for now, because the Kortugans don't have any radar systems to detect them. And besides, they're too drunk to care about an airspace infringement. "The sound of the engine must make their hangovers twice as worse", he thinks to himself.

The recon flight team continues their low-altitude flight in the early morning above Kortugan territory, waiting for their first landmark.

********

"Alright Snakeye, we're passing the lake now."

The landmark has been spotted. They've began calling the mountain range the Southern Mountains because it's south of their objective, and right next to it is a rather large lake that would take a skilled person to completely miss.

"Alright Gryphus flight, you know what do to."

Instinctively, Norman and his squadmates flip off the radar in their Shadows. The computer shuts down slowly, and their chance of having their radar detected goes down as well.

Once the radar is off, another switch is flipped. On the outside of the crafts, reconnaissance equipment starts rolling. Along the bottom of Norman's plane it reads "Smile, you're on camera!"

"Radar's off."
"Alright, we'll be guiding you for the rest of the way. Ready?"
"Yes sir."
"Op Hawkeye is a go. All aircraft turn hard left and get low."

Gryphus flight breaks off into three flights of two. Each flight gets within 20m off the treeline.

As people are starting their commute to work, the three flights of Oresean reconnaissance aircraft break into Sangan airspace at supersonic speeds, and split up to go their separate flight paths.

The first of the three, Alpha flight, flew near the base of Sanga's southern mountain range. So far the only encounter they had was a flyover over a small town. The locals were not happy with the low flying jets setting off their car alarms.

"Alpha flight, be advised target Delta is ten kliks west. Get low and get fast."

Gryphuses 3-4 checked their radar altitude again. 10m over the treeline, perfect. The base is sure to get a show.

At this time, officers and their platoons at a Sangan Homeland Corp's military fort begin their daily routines. As squads of cadets march to the mess hall for breakfast, kerbs with keen hearing sense what they believe is the sound of distant thunder. People stop, officers look up, wondering how that could be when there's barely a cloud in the sky. Soon, the suspicious sound is replaced by jet engines working at supersonic speeds as two Shadows pierce the sound barrier over the camp. Some bewildered enlisted watch the two fly past, others cover their painful ears, and officers who realize that the Samgan confederacy doesnt have jets runs to high command.

"Alpha flight here, we scared them good."
"Alright, continue your course, once within 30 kliks radio to Yutin."

********

"Snakeye we're coming up on target Foxtrot. Got any activity?"
"They're stirring pretty good, be cautious."

Up in the north, Charlie Flight flew along a dry riverbed. Up after a few turns came the Sangan 2nd Joint Squadron's home airbase. As the two Shadows fly past the riverbed an over the Tarmac, they see Sangan fighters lining up on the runway for takeoff. It's clear someone at the military base reported unidentified flying objects. Fortunately, Sanga still has propeller aircraft.

As the Shadows fly past, gunfire erupts. Sangan Anti-Aircraft cannons dotted around the airfield at the intruders. The Oreseans pitch up and start gaining altitude. Flak starts sending shrapnel through air, and pieces of debris fly through the wing of Gryphus 5. He looks back to inspect the damage. Thankfully it hit nothing important, but now his Shadow will turn sluggish. Oh well.

Charlie flight soon clears the anti aircraft field with no more damage. The two aircraft going at such high speeds proved too hard to lead correctly by Sangan eyeballs.

********

"Bravo flight, approaching Echo."

Kerlom, the Sangan capital, was in its morning routine. Kerbs we're starting their 9-5 jobs or got stuck getting to them in the morning traffic. In the capital buildings are buzzing about trying to figure out what's going on with their airspace. A secretary in a nearby office looks out the window to see two grey planes fly closer. The two planes continue to zoom towards the Sangan capital building, and does an alieron roll about 100m above it. Then the two fly off.

********

"Snakeye, target Echo got buzzed."
"What's the damage report, 5?"
"It's a flesh wound."
"Great, Gryphus team fall back to home sector. We have a pie waiting. Good work."

As the Shadows begin their dash to the Sangan coast, the pilots relax knowing that there weren't any Oresean roundels on their crafts.
