1279 - Song Dynasty begins final stand in Guangdong, Battle of Yamen occurs resulting in Song successfully defending against Mongols. Though the region laid ruined, sea routes were still open due to numeric naval superiority.
1280-1368 - The Song Dynasty continued to resist the Yuan Dynasty from Guangdong, defending against numerous land invasions. Increased taxes and forced conscription begins to gather the ire of locals. Merchants are granted more power and influence due to their contributions in supplying the region. Song Dynasty never had the resources to counter-attack against the Mongols. They continue to lay claim to rest of China.
1369 - Collapse of the Yuan Dynasty. Merchants make their move to seize power, utilizing the unrest of citizens and the promise of peace and prosperity, they succesfully gained the support of the generals to force the Emperor to become solely cermonial.
1370 - Declaration of a Republic, a High Council of 8 contains the leaders of the most influential trading families, with a Chief Magistrate elected by the Council. Trade was formally open up to foreign countries and the merchant families agree to contribute towards a massive rebuilding project.
1374 - Establishment of the adminstration zones, the High Council continues to rule from Canton while regional adminstrators are assigned to the ports of Hakka and Jinghai to oversea international trade, especially as a notable increase of foreign population begins to settle near the ports, local councils are created to stem the concerns of these counties.
1390 - Break-down of relations between the the Republic of Guangdong and rest of China. The Council begins to fierecely advocate for autonomy and self-independence from the rest of China. Naval expeditions are sent out to seek out assistance from trading partners, including weapons and personnel resulting in a rapid modernization towards firearms.
1450 - Hakka Rebellion, as The Council attempted to seek aid overseas, this was no cheap endevour resulting in a significant amount of taxes and tariffs levied on the ports, coupled with increasing foreign population who demanded more rights and access to the interior markets resulted in the Hakka Rebellion. As the army was already having trouble dealing with exterior threats, The Council quickly settled the issue by granting more self-autonomy for the administrative regions and equal trading rights for the foreigners. This angered certain trading families and resulted in their expulsion from the High Council, these families begin to turn towards piracy and results in decades of harassment against foreign traders.
1500-1600s - As the Little Ice Age begins to take hold, a significant population from China begins to move south due to economic hardship, resulting in a large population increase as the port cities were seen as opportunities. Naval Conscription began to occur for the new migrants, as an method to train these new hands and put them to work, as well as to instil discipline and loyalty to the Republic.
1790 - Jing Song ascends to the throne at an age of 25.
1798 - Li Zhang succeeds his father as Chief Magistrate by acquiring the approval of the High Council, having survived numerous assassination attempts.
