- The Battle:
- As the battle of Heidan became but a memory in the heads of many soldiers, the battle on the front raged on. It had been clear for a while now that Raxira would never be in a position to completely defeat the combined might of Narcona and Gladia, but it seems they had allies fighting as a fifth column, preventing the total demise of the Raxiran state. More on that later, however.
In terms of fighting strength, both sides were pretty much equal, with the important exception of the areial front, which was dominated by Narcona-Gladia. In modern day warfare, this superiority is absolutely essential, and so the battle started with both airforces engaging one another. Knowing from the onset that they could not win, the Raxiran aircraft engaged the attackers ground-attack and bomber squadrons first, while hoping their AA would cover them against the enemy fighters. As a result, the entire air battle saw huge casualties on both sides, as the AA rattled away and the pilots bailed out. At the end, Gladia-Narcona lost 10 Bombers squadrons, 8 Ground Attack squadrons, 10 Air Superiority squadrons and 3 Anti-Air regiments, while Raxira lost 5 Anti-Air regiments, 12 Air Superiority squadrons and 5 Ground Attack squadrons. After that, the real battle could begin, and as the now-deceased Narconan-Gladian bombers had still taken out a number of enemies before they died, the battle was now in their favour, with most (4 regiments) Raxiran artillery disabled.
Now, the Raxirans had hoped to outflank and outsmart their enemies using this artillery, but it seemed not heir plan would falter. Instead of a suicidal attack, they thus chose to defend what they still had while the Narconan-Gladian onslaught commenced. Raxiria lost 5 Armored battalions, 2 Anti-infantry battalions, 7 Anti-tank battalions, and a whopping 10 Standard infantry regiments, but managed to take out 3 Armoured Battalions, 10 Standard Infantry Regiments, for the first time ever, an Overlord Tank Battalion, 4 Anti-Infantry Battalions, 3 Anti-Tank Regiments, and 1 Special Forces Battalion.
Why were the losses so high for the attackers? Because their artillery was not as strong as expected, the enemies fought with more valour than ever before, and because the Narconan supply lines had been hampered by insurgents since the onset of the fight. These insurgents fought only on their terms, performing irregular warfare as well as they could, and although they lost a single infantry regiment, they prevented Raxira's total demise. It seems Narcona has another problem at hand, and because of this, and because the people simply want peace and to stop the fighting, both sides are urged to make peace soon. They can fight on if they wish, but they ought to ask themselves what they think they'll gain by fighting on. One thing is sure though, fi they do fight on, they can expect even larger casualties, as the scale of the battles keeps increasing with the ambition of all sides' generals.
