Joint Kahlawian-Segerlinen Exercise
In an effort to both help strenghten the ties between the respective militaries, and to gain experience in specific operational fields, the Segerlinen and the Kahlawian government have agreed in a series of manouvers on the island of Faktorien.
Political backgroung:
After a period of diplomatic grievance, the situation between Segerline and the Nation X has reached a breaking point. Nation X decides that military intervention is the only solution to the situation, and hastily assembles an invasion force to land on Faktorien as soon as possible.
Objectives:
OPFOR has to conquer a bridgehead on the island to stage an invasion of the rest of the archipelago. DEFFOR has to deny the adversary such bridgehead.

- Segerlinen defence plan:
- Unit composition
I. Faktorien Volksmiliz (Inf Regiment)
II. Faktorien Volksmiliz (Inf Regiment)
I. Unionswehr Infanterie Regimente (Two Special Forces battalions)
I. Faktorien Luftsabwehr (Air-Superiority Squadron)
I. U-Boot-Flotille (5 Submarines)
I. Jäger-Flotille (3 Destroyers)

The brown X in the southern part of the island is an airfield and army base. It acts as the main base of operations for the Unionswehr Infanterie Regimente and Faktorien Luftsabwehr.
The two Volkmiliz's are spread through the island in villages and in the city (See "Heimwehr info" below)
The island have been divided into sections each represented by colors.
Dark green represents heavily defended areas on land, these are areas which I expect amphibious landings and large assaults. Most of the fortification effort will go to these areas.
Light green represents moderately defended areas. I can see these areas being used by the enemy for amphibious landings if they find no other area accessible or if they want to spread out the landings into different zones. Although the preparations are not as big here as they are on the dark green areas, they are still not really neglected. You can find some pre-dug fortifications here and some patrols, but again not in the scope of the dark green areas.
Beige areas are areas where I don't expect a landing. Only a occasional fortification is found there and an occasional patrol.
Pink areas represent the naval blockade that I am going to issue. All naval units will blockade that strait and stay there untill the last man (or ship). This is to prevent an amphibious landing there.
Heimwehr Info
I. Faktorien Volksmiliz
II. Faktorien Volksmiliz
The two units above are part of the Heimwehr branch of the Segerlinen military. They have recieved the same ammount of training as a National Guard/ Homeguard unit would recieve. They are trained to be both a guerilla and a conventional unit. Their main goal is to act as an reserve force and as a delaying force. The idea is that about 80% of them would join the regular army and follow it in conventional battles and fight as a normal fighting unit.
The rest would disperse and walk around with civilian clothing if a conflict would occur. They would then play civilians when the enemy force fought over their designated territory and would let them take their land. The idea is that they would then have weapon caches distributed throughout the island that they would use. They would gather their weapons when it is time to strike and they would begin a harrasment campaign to take out enemy convoys, destroy powerstations and fuelstations, cut off enemy reserves, assault HQ's, take strategic positions behind enemy lines just so that they must divert troops from the front to retake these positions and to guard their convoys.
Once a sizable enemy force comes close to these troops they will just leave the position in question, hide their weapons in enemy caches, head back to their villages and play civilians. Then they would later regroup and strike another position. They could also help with scouting for the conventional force about enemy troop movements, and also help take key positions when the conventional force counter attacks.
Heimwehr moblization
The Heimwehr is more of a militia. It has armories distributed along the country in cities, villages and communities. The mobilization plan for these units is that once they hear the mobilization alarm ring, they stop everything they do, and head straight to the armory to gear up and recieve orders. Then if they want to rendevouz with the main force, they travel in small groups to the main rendevouz point to avoid detection.
Unionswehr Info
Unlike the Heimwehr, the Unionswehr is always mobilized and is usually deployed at high value positions and army bases. They are highly trained and are thus represented by a GM Special forces unit. They fight as a conventional force with the advantage of high training but are a few in numbers instead. Think of them as a normal US/UK/French or whatever soldier, but with really high training.
Plan
The plan is to have the Unionswehr conduct patrols throughout the island pre-invasion. Once contact with the enemy is established by seeing a enemy warship or a full out firefight, the Heimwehr mobilizes and quickly regroups with the main force, but leaving 20ish % behind for the harrassment thing. If the enemy begins with an amphibious landing, the main bulk of the force will move to the beach where they are landing only leaving a few behind as a rear guard element to defend against the airborne troops. They will set up mainly in the hills when it comes to the battles and use baits to lure enemy tank and mechanized formations into choke points and use the hilly terrain to their advantage to outmanouver the tanks and neutralize them. However it will fight conventionally with foxholes and defence lines and trenches and such. Whenever the airborne troops drops into my territory, the rear guard element will move there and keep them occupied and delay them as much as possible until reinforcements from the main force is sent.
If the enemy makes an airborne assault before the amphibious invasion, then a detachment of the Unionswehr will quickly move to their landing site and surround it and take pop-shots and fire motars into that area to keep the enemy on their toes. Meanwhile the local Heimwehr in the area will quickly mobilize and make a full out assault a la the battle of la-drang.
All vital positions such as radar stations, power stations etc always has soldiers guarding them.
The airforce will conduct reconissance aswell to spot enemy landing craft, their main fleet, big troop movements etc.
The navy will defend the pink striped strait to the last ship to prevent a amphibious landing.

BATTLEPLAN MAP AND OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES

-At D-Day -1, reconnaissance of both primary and secondary staging bay is done [REDACTED]. If imaging finds that primary site is already secured by the enemy with forces superior to regimental size, invasion fleet will fall back to secondary site (Note: all subsequent indications will be given in format primary/secondary). The reconneissance will also image the Advance Corridor, while searching for weapons depots, communication hubs, command bunkers, defensive lines.
-The invasion fleet will advance in anti-submarine defence convoy, with the 3rd Submarine Attack Force scouting ahead.
-Before entering the Staging bay, the submarines will take position in Patrol Area One/Three, while the 1st Guards Brigade secures LZ Hotel/Zulu, inserted via helicopters, with special care to the mountains overlooking the area. The operation will happen under the air cover umbrella of the two missile cruisers.
-The destroyers will enter the bay first, sweeping it from enemy subs. Meanwhile, the 2nd IG AIR will disembark with his vehicles at LZ India/Xray, secureing the other side of the bay, eventually supported by naval fire. Meanwhile, the cruisers will shell sites identified in D-Day -1 recon, priviliging comms and command.
-The main force will then land at LZ Lima/Zebra, in the following order of precedence: 3rd AC Brigade>1st IG AIR>3rd ArtBat>4th IG AABat>1st IG ARM>2nd IG ARM.
-As soon the 3rd AABat is ashore, the force at LZ Lima/Zebra will start moving along the Advance Corridor. During this advance, the Air Cavalry will take the lead, identifing enemy concentrations and calling fire support missions on them. It's likely that at this time the militia units will be still reuniting. If this is not the case and the advance will face organized regimental resistance, the forces will stop, to wait for the armor to push through. In no case, the 3rd ACB will leave the AA umbrella.
-Once reached Objective Alpha, the force will proceed to encircle and assault it, with the objective of either destroying or capturing the maximum possible of enemy troops, and to capture the airstrip in the most intact state possible.
-Once captured Objective Alpha, infantry will either advance into Faktorien to secure it, or the artillery will demolish the harbor facilities. We reccommend in case a significant number of enemy troops escaped to the city, to go with the second case. In either case, 3rd Submarine Attack Force will take position in Patrol Zone Two.
ANCILLARY OPERATIONS
[REDACTED]
After the end of the land exercise, the surface fleet will assemble around a Segerlinen carrier, to defend her from simulated submarine attacks by both Segerlinen and Kahlawian subs.
NOTE ON THIRD PARTY UNITS
A joint Kahlawian/Segerlinen umpire commission will watch over the disposition of all the units. If an unidentified unit fails to identify itself and/or refuses to be boarded for inspection, use deadly force is allowed.

Re: Joint Kahlawian-Segerlinen Exercise
The Kahlawian Invasion of Faktorien Island
The sun was only just coming up, as the Kahwlawian invasion fleet arrived around the waters of Faktorien. Prepared and psyched for the oncoming simulation, the men readied their landing craft, as the accompanying offensive ships set out to secure the staging areas. Originally hoping to use their primary staging bay, the Kahlawian general quickly released the entrance to this bay was in fact both not wide enough and not deep enough to support any serious staging with naval support. As such, the forces were redirected to the secondary staging bay.
Meanwhile, the Segerlinen defense force had been readying themselves for some time, moving into the hills near the staging area as the fleet's intended target became more and more obvious. They were a bit spooked, realising the area only had minor defenses, but it was a hell of a lot better than the primary zone, which didn't have any defenses in the first place! The Segerlinen forces manning the various radar and radio stations had meanwhile had problems with their equipment for the past day, caused by the active jamming by Electronic Warfare components on the Kahlawian fleet.
The landing beaches were earily quiet. Although the defenses were in fact in place, many of the near-militia level soldiers had abandoned their positions and headed into the hills. In the end, it turned out to be the best solution, as the defenses were quickly destroyed by the massive firepower provided by the Kahlawian fleet. Said fleet had no destractions such as an enemy fleet, which was in fact stationed on the completely opposite side of the island. As the morning progressed, the Kahlawian fleet disembarked its troops, and although they received significant harassment from the irregular components of the defending force, it was not of any real danger for the heavily armoured and mechanised invasion force.
The real trouble for the attackers came as the troops advanced through the hills towards their objectives. You see, much of the defending strategy was based on taking out the enemy armour one by one, and this proved highly successful in the opening hours of the offensive. Indeed, they might have stopped the enemy there compeltely had they not sent so many of their elite troops back as a rearguard, one that proved unnecessary as the expected Kahlawian airborne force never arrived. Sadly, the defenders aircraft squadron had been grounded due to the significant naval AA presence, which was another factor that could have allowed for the fight to end right there.
As the attacking troops progressed, however, they found they ahd lost more than half their troops before meeting their first land-based objective, the Faktorien army and airfield base. Here, the rearguard proved their worth, as they managed to stall the invaders long enough for the rest of the island's defenders to fall back into Faktorien proper. As the invading force surrounded the army base, this rear guard managed to retreat with heavy losses, allowing the attackers to finally occupy the heavily fought-over base. The city of Faktorien itself proved an entirely different fight, as the attackers were fearful to attack seen the large number of infantry-based defenders, not to mention the entire fleet stationed to protect the strait offering access to the neighbouring island. As such, they proceded to bomb Faktorien, attempting to destroy its extensive harbour works, and even succeeding in this (to some degree).
At this point, local commanders of the Kahlawian Armoured, IFV and Special Forces Brigades ordered a final push. As their tanks and armoured vehicles rolled into the town, preceded by Special Forces, explosions lit up the sky, as the Destroyers opened fire on the attackers. Fearing catastrophic losses, the Commanders raipidly ordered their troops to dig in. Quickly, the Kahlawians sent in their fleet to destract the Destroyers, staying at a distance to limit casualties. The Tank Commanders sighed of relief, and they were quick to continue their offensive into the island's capital. While they took heavy casualties, the various measures they had taken, combined with the high number of deaths on both sides, allowed them to emerge victorious, albeit barely.
As for the final naval simulation... a result emerged that no one expected, as the submarines quickly scored a (simulated) killing hit on the Segerline carrier, using their large numbers to their advantage and overwhelming the amount of defenders.
Both sides should learn their lessons from the mistakes they made and the successes they have achieved, while it may perhaps be a good idea for other nations to participate in this kind of exercise in the future as well. (Contact me first).
